According to reports, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced, HP, Toshiba, Dell, Lenovo, Acer is recalling about 100,000 Sony manufactured notebook computer batteries with problem, the reasons are that they received 40 complaints of overheating notebook computer reports. These batteries's producting time is from 2004 to 2005.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission points out that Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba, Dell and other computer manufacturers have received 40 complaints report so far, the report has "4 incident resulted in minor burns, 21 resulted in minor property damage." According to some reports, with the notebook computer battery problem will smoke, and even flames.

Build and Design

At first glance HP dv1000 computer looks a lot more expensive that it really is. The outer shell is made of silver colored plastic. The inside of the notebook is all black with a sort of textured feel to it. I would have preferred all silver rather than the two tones, but the look seems to work for this model. The laptop is sturdy, but I do have problems carrying it from the side, it seems a bit fragile and "creaky" when I am grasping it. The screen has very little or no flex to it, you would have to push very hard on it to see a ripple. The hinges seem very sturdy, there's no wobbling to the screen at all, when you put the screen in place it stays there. I have a problem with the latch that closes the notebook though. With just a slight push on the latch the screen releases and I don't like the placement of it, it is right below the touchpad and I find myself pressing it with my thumb when using the pad. I feel they could have made the latch a bit sturdier.

In a word,The HP dv1000 is a great lightweight widescreen notebook at a great price. It travels easily has a great keyboard and does all the things it's supposed to with a few added features.

Fujifilm F700 includes a 16MB xD card with the camera. That's enough to get started with, but you'll want a larger one right away. xD cards are currently available as large as 512MB, and Fuji lists them as supported in the manual.

Compact cameras usually use proprietary batteries, and the F700 is no exception. It uses Fuji's NP-40 lithium-ion battery, which has a so-so 2.6 Wh of power. Fuji estimates that you can take about 200 pictures with 50% LCD use. Proprietary batteries are quite expensive and you can't use AAs when you're in a bind -- which is why I prefer cameras that use "regular batteries".

The F700 offers a full range of exposure control, with Auto, Program AE, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, and Manual exposure modes available via the Mode dial. There's also a Scene Program mode, with Portrait, Landscape, Sports, and Night Scene options. In straight Auto mode, the camera controls everything about the exposure, except for options like zoom and drive (single shot or continuous shooting) settings.

There are no other cameras that use a sensor like the SuperCCD SR. As always, I recommend a trip down to your local reseller to try out the FinePix F700 before you buy!

Ignore the 400x digital zoom, as this is simply pixel enlargement instead of true movement along an optical z-axis. It will be difficult, as it’s plastered all over their literature and monogrammed directly onto the side of the camcorder body.

As is the case with many cameras these days, the EasyShare V570 has built-in memory instead of a bundled memory card. The V570 has 32MB of built-in memory, which is a decent amount for a camera with this resolution, but you'll want to buy a larger memory card anyway. The V570 uses Secure Digital or MultiMedia cards, and I recommend a 256MB or 512MB card as a good place to start. A high speed memory card is not a required purchase.

Fuji includes a 16MB xD card with the camera, which holds a grand total of seven high resolution pictures. So consider a larger card "a must". xD cards are currently available as large as 512MB, and I think 128MB is a good starter size for most people. Be warned that xD cards tend to be more expensive than CompactFlash and SD cards.

The F440 uses a compact lithium-ion battery known as the fujifilm NP-30 to power the camera. The battery isn't exactly what I'd call powerful, with just 2.1 Wh of energy. That translates to 150 photos per charge, using the new CIPA battery life standard (which I'll be using from now on, when possible).

The now familiar EN-EL1 rechargeable battery (5.0 Wh), also found on the CP5000 and CP5700, is used here. Nikon estimates that the battery will last for about 100 minutes in "average use". The run-down of the EN-EL1 battery is about 100 minutes (in the conditions typical of Nikon: display on, zoom adjusted for each shot, flash used for a third of shots, NORMAL quality, 2272*1704).
Nikon includes an external charger for the EN-EL1. They also give you a lens cap and strap to protect the lens.

Here's a new one: the CP4500 has a feature called Perspective Control which allows you to change the vertical perspective. The example Nikon gives is to make a shot of a building taken looking up at it appear more square (like it was taken at eye level). You adjust the image using the four-way switch (up/down only), and when you're happy with it, you wait 40 seconds for the new image to be written to the CF card.

Another CP4500 feature lets you resize your image to a much smaller size. Choose from 640 x 480, 320 x 240, 160 x 120, and 96 x 72.
One nice feature is the ability to delete a selection of photos, instead of just one or all of them. You can also mark images to be automatically transferred when the camera is hooked into the computer.

The Coolpix 4500 excels in the image-quality department, providing especially detailed, sharp, and clean images with little noise. It accurately meters and exposes pictures, and color tends more toward the natural than the oversaturated.

The Eee PC is marketed as an "Easy to Learn, Easy to Work, Easy to Play" computer. Due to its size, it is classified as an Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC). Whilst ultra-portable notebooks often weigh about 2kg, the Eee PC is a featherweight 0.92kg, with high qutlity eee pc battery. It is therefore an ultra-mobile machine in the true sense of the expression. The machine is small enough that it can be used in just about any environment. However, this is a full PC, not just a 'mobile Internet' device like Nokia's Internet tablets.

Build and Design

The designers at Asus had no easy task creating an attractive ultraportable notebook while also making it cheap to produce. The case seams match up with reasonably tight tolerances, plastics feel thick (though the pearl-like white plastics look cheap) and the display hinges are molded into body with the battery. Lifting the display cover you find the amazingly small keyboard surface and even smaller touchpad resting below the recessed display and speakers. In short, the build quality is quite high despite the low cost.

Screen

The screen is 7-inches diagonally with LED back lighting and has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. For the sake of a reference, below is what you can see when you pull up the homepage of the site you are on right now.

The Eee PC might not have a glossy, high contrast display like most notebooks made in the last year, but the bright and even backlight helps make for an enjoyable reading experience. We even found the quality of the colors more than sufficient for viewing movies or You Tube videos.

Heat and Noise

Even with the low voltage processor and SSD drive, the Asus Eee PC produced as much heat as any other notebook in the same price range. The keyboard and bottom of the notebook got quite hot even under normal use, and the fan was always running in an attempt to keep the system cool. Fan noise was among the quietest we’ve heard. The only way to tell the fan is blowing is to put your hand next to the air vent to feel the warm air blow past.

Battery

Under normal use, backlight at 100 percent and using wireless for web browsing and watching a DivX movie at 75 percent volume, the Eee PC managed to deliver three hours and 23 minutes of battery life(asus eee pc laptop battery). We were hoping for more given the low voltage processor and flash-based storage, but for a notebook the battery life is still very good. Lowering the screen brightness and turning off the wireless card should provide enough battery life for prolonged use.

While the battery life was reasonable, we did experience some minor problems with the on-screen battery meter. After two hours and 8 minutes of browsing the web wirelessly and watching a DivX movie the low battery warning popped up on screen and reported that the Eee PC would shut down in 3 minutes unless it was plugged into a power source. The Eee PC then kept working for another one hour and 15 minutes before the notebook shutdown. Bottom line, the on-screen battery indicator cannot be trusted.

The Eee PC might have a weird name, but it's one of the few products that lives up to the marketing hype. This notebook truly is “easy to learn, easy to work, and easy to play.”

The Olympus E-300 comes complete with the new Zuiko Digital 14-45mm f3.5-5.6 zoom lens. Apart from this you will find USB and video cables, shoulder strap and body and lens caps. As with all other DSLRs no memory card is included, so our advise would be to go out and buy the largest CompactFlash card you can afford. Keep in mind that a single JPEG image from an 8-megapixel camera at maximum resolution will be something like 5Mb to 8Mb, depending on the level of compression used. Fortunately card capacities are rising as prices are coming down.

The E-300 uses the BLM1 li-ion battery which is the same as the one used in the E-1 and several other Olympus cameras. During our tests we managed to take about 400 images with one single charge. We didn't skimp on using the LCD and it was freezing outside, so results might well be a bit more favourable in warmer circumstances. The BCM2 AC-charger takes about 5 hours to get an empty battery ready for action again. We did not have a camera manual to our disposal at the time of our test, but from our experience we know that Olympus always include a printed manual to explain the basic functions of the camera, whereas advanced options are explained on the accompanying CD.

Image quality

Let's find out if performance of the included kit lens can really match the professional standard of the FourThirds system. The Zuiko Digital 14-45mm f3.5-5.6 zoom lens (28-90mm eq), has a shortest focusing distance of 0.38m/1.3ft which does not make it suitable for true macro work but - to be honest - this is not what most photographers will use it for anyway. Far more important is the general image quality in day to day picture situations. We have to conclude that in this field the lens performs quite well. Sharpness at wide angle is good although at telephoto it appears to be a little softer. Stopping down the lens obviously improves on this. There is some barrel distortion at wide angle but it appears to be less than with 28mm equivalent lenses on other prosumer DSLRs. Pincushion distortion at tele is not an issue, as there isn't any. Vignetting is kept well under control at wide angle although we found some slight shading in extreme corners at tele setting - see one of the sample images above. Chromatic aberration is completely absent.

Like other Nikon cameras, the Coolpix 3700 includes a Lexar "starter" memory card. The one included here is 16MB, which is okay, but you'll want a larger one right away. Might I suggest 128MB as a good place to start? The CP3700 does not support MultiMediaCards!

The F402 is a very small metal camera designed for point-and-shoot users. It uses a 2.1 Megapixel SuperCCD sensor rather than a regular CCD used by other cameras. The "deal" with the SuperCCD is that the individual light sensors on the SuperCCD are arranged in a different pattern that on traditional CCDs, allowing for a higher density. The top-ranked Canon PowerShot S50 offers superb image quality and easy-to-use controls. Offering almost all the advanced features and optional manual controls of the G3, yet simple enough for beginners to use, the S50 should appeal to anyone who wants high resolution in a compact package.

The included 32MB CompactFlash card is a good place to start, but you'll definitely need a larger card. The S50 works with Type I or Type II CompactFlash cards, so the IBM Microdrive is an option (and a good one at that).

The S50 uses a smaller battery than the G3. The NB-2LH battery has a respectable 4.2 Watt/hours of power. Canon estimates that you can get about 335 photos per charge with 50% LCD use, or 3 hours in playback mode.

Canon includes an external battery charger with the S50. You plug it directly into the wall -- no cords needed. I like that. Charging the battery takes about 80 minutes.

We're very pleased with the S50's images. Exposures generally came out just right, and our photos showed excellent detail and dynamic range. Canon's firmware doesn't oversharpen the pictures, so they have a very smooth -- if slightly soft -- look. Noise levels are low, and even our ISO 400 shots were less noisy than what we've seen from many 5-megapixel competitors. We recommend using the ISO 50 or 100 setting when shooting in bright light to obtain beautifully smooth, noise-free shots.

Recently, I got a Sony Cybershot DSC-T100 and went out with it yesterday, using it from about midday to about 11 at night (alright maybe not using it the ENTIRE time),I'm really happy with the quality of the photos and how easy it is to take quick pictures.So,now I want to share it with you.

Sony includes a 16MB Memory Stick card with the DSC-F77.I'd suggest 128MB as a good starter size (though a larger card wouldn't hurt!). You can use regular Memory Sticks (limited to 256MB) or the new Memory Stick Pro cards, which have a larger capacity (up to 1GB) and higher transfer rates. Memory Stick Pro cards tend to be a little more expensive than other formats (such as CompactFlash).

The DSC-F77 uses a proprietary lithium-ion battery known as the sony NP-FC11. This battery translates into spending 165 minutes (330 photos) in record mode and 400 minutes in playback mode.

Casio EXILIM EX-S20 is a mere 11.3 mm thick, 83mm wide and 53mm high. Its stylish stainless steel case resists de-coloration and it's finished to a high gloss using CASIO's 'Ex Fine Blast Treatment'. Furthermore, a new lens protection cover has been added to help protect the lens from impact and dirt.

The Exilim's EX-S20 stainless-steel body is well built and nicely finished, though getting a comfortable grip on its tiny dimensions is a bit tricky. Using the hardware and menu-based controls is generally quick and simple.

The Canon PowerShot SD700 IS is compact, though slightly larger than the other two models. Still, it's the right size to slip into a jacket or a loose pants pocket. At 6.8 ounces, it's a bit heavy for its small size, giving it a nice, solid feel.

Canon includes a 16MB memory card along with the SD700, which is pretty small for a 6MP camera (holding just four photos at the highest quality setting). That means that you'll need to buy a memory card, which drives up the initial purchase price of the camera a bit. Like the other cameras in the SD series, the SD700 uses Secure Digital memory cards, and I'd suggest a 512MB card as a good starter size. The camera takes advantage of high speed memory cards, so it's worth spending the extra bucks for one of those.

While the "old" SD550 had decent battery life compared to the other Digital ELPHs, it was a bit lacking compared to the competition, so Canon came up with a new, more powerful battery. This new battery, known as the canon NB-5L, packs 4.1 Wh of energy, up about 40% from the SD550's NB-3L battery.

The main camera controls rest in a four-way-plus-OK pad, while menu, print, and display buttons sit next to the LCD screen. You change the flash, timer, macro, and ISO sensitivity settings directly through the control pad, while more technical settings such as exposure compensation, white balance, and color adjustment are accessed via the function menu. The buttons are round and responsive, and they feel comfortable even under large thumbs. My only real quibble with the SD700's control layout is the tiny, finicky power button, which is wedged in an uncomfortable position just above the LCD screen and to the right of the viewfinder.

The SD700 IS's quick and responsive performance hits the right note. A shutter lag of 0.5 second in bright light and 0.8 second in dim light are about average for an ultracompact, but its 1.5-second time to first shot and 1.6-second shot-to-shot time definitely rise above the crowd. Even with the onboard flash enabled, shot-to-shot time rose to only 1.9 seconds. And it keeps up the pace in continuous-shooting mode--about 2.1fps in burst mode for an effectively unlimited number of shots.

The Canon PowerShot SD700 IS is a very strong, compact digital camera that produces great pictures. Its price is a bit high compared to that of its little brothers, the SD600 and SD630, but its great image stabilization and subsequent blur-free photos are worth the extra few quid.

There is a 32MB xD Picture Card in the box. It's enough to start with, but you'll want a larger card right away, as those 5 million pixel images take up a lot of space. xD cards are the smallest memory cards out there, and theoretically offer some of the best performance as well. Unfortunately, as of this writing, xD cards aren't any larger than 128MB.

The C-50 zoom is Olympus' first digicam to use a proprietary battery, which isn't surprising considering the size of the camera. I'm not a huge fan of such batteries, but they are unavoidable with cameras this small. The Olympus LI-10B has 4.0 Watt/hours of power.The battery is the same power as casio np-20 battery.

In addition to the still image capture the C-50 Zoom also records 320x240 and 160x120 QuickTime movie modes at 15fps without sound. The length of movie clips is limited to 33 seconds in HQ and 148 seconds in SQ quality. The movie quality indoor is quite good but outdoors you need to watch out for lighting "hot spots" like sun glints off of reflective objects which create nasty top-to-bottom of frame purple streaks. You also have to be careful to keep the sun behind you as the lens goes to full wide angle when you activate movie mode. You can't use the optical zoom but you can enable the digital zoom from the menu.

One of the biggest differences between the old S60/S70 and the new S80 is the type of memory card used. While the old models used CompactFlash, the S80 uses Secure Digital cards. Canon includes a 32MB SD card with the camera, which doesn't hold very many 8 Megapixel photos, so buying a larger card is a must. I would suggest picking up a 512MB or 1GB SD card if possible. The camera takes advantage of high speed SD cards so it's worth paying a few extra bucks for one.

High level control and easy to use

The camera's smaller size has not compromised ease of use. A new large 2.5-inch LCD is adjustable to one of 15 brightness levels and has a Quick-bright function to facilitate shooting in sunny conditions. A real-time histogram, which appears on the LCD monitor, has been incorporated to allow the user to evaluate exposure easily when composing. The selectable grid line display helps with composition and levelling horizons.

With a newly designed user interface, the S80 offers faster and more intuitive operation. The Multi Control Dial allows quick setting of menu and shooting functions, as well as rapid scroll through images during playback. Conveniently, the mode dial is now positioned so it can be better viewed when composing shots. Modes, My Colors...and movies

The S80 incorporates a total of 21 shooting modes: in addition to the full Manual mode and other creative zone modes that photographers would expect on an S-Series camera, nine new special scene modes have been incorporated. My Colors--located on the mode dial--allows the expansion of creativity in digital photography. Special effects, such as Color Swap or Custom Colors, which allows users to select their preferred color balance for any given shot, can be performed in-camera and viewed on the LCD while shooting stills and movies. These effects could previously only be achieved using PC software after shooting.

Extended movie shooting functions feature in the S80, including a first for the market: a high-resolution (1024 x 768, 15 frames per second) XGA movie mode, made possible by DIGIC II's processing speed. Movies in this mode can be up to 1GB in size and are ideal for viewing full screen on a PC or TV. Casio Exilim EX-S100 is extremely compact, beautifully designed, and easy to use. But in our formal image-quality tests, it earned an overall score that ranked among the lowest we've recorded recently. The EX-S100 is fine for quick and simple snapshots, but not the best choice for avid photographers seeking a small, pocketable camera.

White Balance: EIGHT White Balance settings including Shade and Manual gray card as well as Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Incandescent and two Fluorescent settings. These are all very important to getting good color and are much better than the paltry offerings of most other compacts.

Memory: SD memory cards, none included. I use a 1GB 32x Lexar card I got here and it works great, capable of storing something crazy like 1,000 images at a normal setting. You can get as few as 550 at the FINE 2048 setting, or 10,000 at the economy 640 x 480 setting. The 640 x 480 setting is all you need for the internet and email, so you could store a lifetime of snaps on one postage stamp sized card if you never intended to print them.

The EX-S100 includes an additional 9.3 MB of permanent built-in memory instead of a throwaway SD card. Therefore the S100 can record images, movies or sound without a card and also plays some neat tricks with all this memory. This is great for spy use since you can hand all your memory cards to the guard when entering a sensitive facility and shoot away with this little camera that fits undetected in a pocket.

Like all of Sony's 2007 cameras, the Cyber-shot DSC-H9 has built-in memory instead of having a memory card included in the box -- 31MB worth to be exact. That holds just ten photos at the highest quality setting, so you'll want to buy a memory card right away. The DSC-H9 uses Sony's Memory Stick Pro Duo cards, which currently top out at 8GB, and I'd recommend picking up a 1GB card along with the camera. An adapter is included with all MS Duo cards so they work in standard Memory Stick slots.

The DSC-H9 uses the same NP-BG1 lithium-ion battery as several of Sony's other cameras. This is the only Sony digital camera battery that I know of that isn't an "InfoLithium", which means that it won't tell you how many minutes you have left before the battery dies. The NP-BG1 has 3.6 Wh of energy, which isn't much compared to what you'll find in other ultra zooms.

While it’s easy to compare numbers in theory, the H9’s lens has a big advantage over its rivals in practice: it focuses very quickly indeed, making it much easier to grab action shots be they of wildlife or sports.

The H9 also trumps its rivals with its screen: not only is it much bigger at 3in, but you’ll also enjoy the flexibility of flip-out capabilities. It may not twist to be usable in portrait orientation or for self-portraits, but it’s still very impressive

If you shoot primarily outdoors in daytime--especially sports, children and animals--and don't find the interface quite as crazy-making as I do, the H9 is a great choice. The approximately $100 difference in street prices between the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7 and DSC-H9 makes your choice simple: if you can forgo the infrared and the flexible LCD, then buy the cheaper model.

In terms of specifications, the IXUS 300 is impressive considering its size, featuring a 2.11 megapixel CCD and a 2.5x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 35-105mm on a 35mm camera. This is a slight improvement over the preceding digital IXUS (see Labs, issue 75, p92), which featured a 2x optical zoom lens. There's also the option of a digital zoom up to a maximum total of 7.5x. Images can be viewed using the optical viewfinder or a 1.5in LCD screen, which is bright and detailed, although it can be difficult to see in sunny conditions.

For the new model, Canon has mainly made internal changes, bringing it more up to date by adding manual white balance control, an extra level of compression and video-capture functionality. However, the controls layout has also been modified to make it more intuitive.

The Canon Digital IXUS 300 is an excellent digital camera for those looking for style and simplicity of control, but with first-rate image quality. It's not cheap though, and Casio's superb 3.34 megapixel QV-3500EX (reviewed issue 81, p165) is similarly priced. But if you want a stylish, high-quality pocket-sized digital camera and camera battery (canon nb-1l) with long battery life, the IXUS 300 won't disappoint.

When you have a camera this small, you've gotta have a proprietary battery. Casio uses one called the NP-20, which seems familiar for some reason. This 2.3 Watt/hour battery will get you about 80 minutes of juice per charge, according to Casio. Charging the battery (in the USB cradle) takes two hours.

Speaking of the USB cradle, this is a dock similar to those found on other cameras. Unlike Kodak, HP, and Fuji, Casio actually includes the dock with the camera. You use the dock to transfer photos as well as recharge the battery. The dock does not have to be powered to use the USB connection, which usually isn't the case with docking stations.

The Exilim has a slot for Secure Digital / MultiMedia cards, but one is not included. Instead, the camera has 12MB of built-in memory. A "dummy card" sits in the SD/MMC slot to protect it from dirt and dust.

The Exilim produced pictures that were very good for a 1.2-megapixel camera. Colors were vivid and accurate, and the Exilim's variable ISO sensitivity produced nice pictures in low light, even without a flash. Our test images didn't look great on the PC screen—especially when compared with the 2-, 3-, and 4-megapixel cameras in our roundup—but they produced perfectly acceptable 4-by-6 prints. The 1.6-inch TFT LCD screen is bright and sharp, even in full outdoor light. Unfortunately, the fixed-focus lens really limits the camera's versatility; we couldn't focus on the test target, so the camera couldn't complete any of our performance tests.

The Exilim comes with a USB docking cradle that does double duty as a charger for the camera's
np- 20 lithium ion battery. And battery life was very good, even though we used the LCD screen almost continuously. The model we tested includes MP3 record and playback features, and it comes with a built-in microphone for taking voice memos, a wired remote control, and a set of earbuds. The Casio Exilim EX-S1 omits these features.

With its tiny size and way-cool cachet, the Exilim is a great yet pricey party camera. But if you're looking for sharp picture quality, you'll be disappointed.

Canon ZR700 digital camera review

The Canon ZR700 comes with a CCD that measures1/6th inch, with 680K gross pixels, 340K effective pixels in 4:3, and 450K effective pixels in 16:9 with the image stabilization turned off. When shooting with this imager the video results tended to be oversaturated, producing an image that while strong and vibrant was not necessarily an accurate representation of the actual color chart. This tendency towards oversaturation is common amongst the lower-priced models of nearly all manufacturers. It displayed an improvement over last year's ZR300, which struggled with both image and noise. Although noise levels didn’t show a huge improvement between 2005 and 2006, the amount of color information being produced by the ZR700 is definitely an improvement over the ZR300.

Today, they market a wide range of popular cameras meant for the consumer market but also for more advanced photographers. Their latest model, the Sony DSC-V1 is clearly aimed at more upmarket shooters, especially if you consider the elaborate range of features it offers.

Over the years Sony's Cybershot range of cameras have distinguished themselves from the competition by a wide selection of sizes and body shapes, which more often than not could be called unconventional. Not so the Sony DSC-V1, which looks very traditional in that it resembles a 35mm rangefinder camera from the past.

Sony gives you a 32MB Memory Stick in the box, which is (barely) enough to start with. You'll want a larger card right away -- I'd say 128MB at the very least. The V1, like all the 2003 Sony models, supports Memory Stick Pro cards, which come as large as 1GB.

A smaller camera like the requires a small battery, so Sony uses their proprietary NP-FC11 here.When it's time to charge the FC11 battery, just plug in the included AC adapter and wait for 150 minutes.

Image quality

It is not surprising that with a lens like the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar, the V-1's images are razor sharp. After all, Zeiss lenses have been around for as long as anyone can remember and they have always been synonymous with quality. All images possess an excellent sharpness from corner to corner, with no vignetting and only a little softening in the extreme corners at maximum telephoto. There is little barrel distortion at the wide angle end of the zoom and only slight pincushion distortion at the tele end. In all distortion is within the average range for digital cameras in this class, also considering the V-1 has a 4x zoom lens. Some colour fringing was visible in bright contrast situations and this seemed a bit more than average. A rather striking phenomenon was that the accuracy of the optical viewfinder actually varied quite a lot depending on the zoom setting. At wide angle it showed much less of the actual image than at the tele setting. The LCD showed a full 100% coverage though.

Conclusion

The Sony DSC-V1 is a very nice little camera with excellent image quality. We think it would be ideally suited to the advanced photographer who likes his photography to be a bit more creative and adventurous. There is the possibility to manually control settings such as aperture and shutter speed, white balance, focusing or flash output. The camera supports add-on lenses and has exposure bracketing with adjustable steps. There are advanced features such as the unique hologram AF laser focusing system or the Nightframing mode which can capture pictures in complete darkness. Add to this the Carl Zeiss 4x zoom lens with Smart (digital) Zoom feature or the hot shoe for mounting an external flash,longer battery life sony NP-FC11 battery and you have the perfect tool for creative photography.

Canon Powershot G6 Digital Camera Review

The much-anticipated Canon PowerShot G6 brings 7-megapixel resolution, a 2" LCD screen, and a slick new body design to Canon's popular G-Series camera line.

The PowerShot G6 is the latest revision of Canon's venerable G-series of digital cameras. This latest camera packs a whopping 7.1 Megapixels into a sleek new design. While most of the G5's features remain, there are a few new things worth mentioning about the G6, including:

Canon includes a 32MB CompactFlash card with the camera, which seems a little small for a camera with this resolution. So you'll want to buy a larger card, and I recommend 256MB at the very minimum. The included card is marked as "high speed", and from my own experiences I think it would be considered 8X. The G6 can use Type I or Type II cards, including the Microdrive, and it supports the FAT32 format for cards larger than 2GB.

The G6 uses a higher capacity version of the BP-511 battery that was used by the G5 -- this one's known as the BP-511A. Where the old battery had 8.1 Wh of energy, the new battery has a whopping 10.3 Wh. Canon estimates that you can take about 300 photos using the CIPA battery life standard, or spend over 6 hours in playback mode.

My usual complaints about proprietary batteries apply here. They're expensive ($50 a pop), and you can't put in a set of alkalines to get you through the rest of the day like you could with an AA-based camera.

Image quality

With Canon being one of the leading names in today's industry, it should come as no surprise that the images delivered by the new Canon G6 are truly superb. Once again Canon have succeeded in making a good camera even better. Images taken with the by now familiar f2.0-3.0, 7.2 - 28.8mm (35-140mm eq.) Canon zoom lens are bright, sharp and properly exposed with nicely saturated colours without being over the top. Pictures taken with flash indoors show an even illumination of the subject, and if you feel the light is still too harsh you can power the flash down for a slight fill-in effect. The camera delivers very smooth images with very little noise at ISO 50 or 100 and even at ISO 400 noise is not really an issue, as images remain perfectly useable.

Distortion is kept at bay with only a little barrel distortion at the wide end of the lens that gradually disappears once you zoom in towards the tele setting. The latter shows virtually no pin cushioning at all. There is no vignetting or light loss at the edges of the image and Canon has done a good job of keeping purple fringing levels down. The automatic white balance worked well enough although sometimes it did not quite manage to suppress the "green" colour cast of fluorescent lighting. We would advise you to switch to one of the two fluorescent settings under this kind of lighting. Overall we were very pleased with the image quality of this new Canon. We are sure that if you decide to travel light and leave your bulky dSLR equipment at home for once, images taken by the Canon G6 can easily keep up with what you are used to.

Conclusion

The Canon Powershot G6 is a truly excellent camera. Image quality is great, handling is superb and it is full of powerful features that will be appreciated by advanced and professional photographers alike. The 7-megapixel images provide more than enough resolution to make superb A3 sized prints with nicely saturated colours and excellent detail.

It has a nice design, and has an easy-to-hold and easy-to-shoot build. It's an attractive and compact camera 8.1-megapixel, that comes in metallic silver, black and red.

Lens/Zoom

New with this generation of T series cameras, the T100 has a 5x optical zoom lens for a 35mm equivalent focal length range of 35-175mm. The aperture range at wide angle if f3.5-f5.6. At telephoto, this range is f4.4-f10. As has been the case with just about every Sony T model, the lens does not protrude at all from the body of the camera. A sliding lens cover powers on the camera when you open it and keeps the lens protected while in your pocket. If you just want to review images on your camera, it can be powered on with a button as well.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T100 is another nice camera in Sony’s ultra-slim T line. It definitely caters to the individual looking for a high quality, stylish camera who doesn’t mind paying a higher price, as seems to be typical for Sony products. The EX-S500 is a 5 megapixel camera, with 3x optical zoom, 2.2 inch LCD, Anti Shake DSP, and 30 Best Shot settings. If you're looking for an ultra-compact with some great features, the Casio Exilim EX-S500 is a good option. While not at the top of the class in image quality, it's images are still good and will satisfy most users.

In the Box

Casio is one of the growing number of camera manufacturers who no longer include a memory card with their cameras. A year or two you'd see a 16MB (or 32MB if you're lucky) memory card included with the S500, but no more. Instead Casio has built 8.3MB of memory right into the camera. That holds a grand total of TWO photos at the highest quality setting, so consider a larger memory card to be a required purchase. The EX-S500 uses Secure Digital and MultiMedia cards, and Casio recommends the use of a high speed SD card with the camera. A 256MB card is a good size to start with.

The S500 uses one casio NP-20 lithium-ion rechargeable battery for power. This small battery packs 2.6Wh of energy, which isn't too much. To charge the battery just put the camera onto the cradle. It takes about two hours to fully charge the NP-20 battery. If you want to charge the battery outside of the dock you can do so by purchasing the np-20 external charger.

Features

The S500 is a 5 megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom. The camera does not have an optical viewfinder, only a 2.2 inch LCD. While there isn't a brightness adjustment for the LCD, it does adjust its brightness depending on the ambient light. (If you walk into a dark room, the LCD image brightens).

One of the selling features of the camera is the Anti Shake DSP. To minimize blurring in low light (slow shutter speed) situations, the camera will boost the ISO sensitivity to allow a quicker shutter speed. It is effective, but will never be as superior as optical image stabilization. The downside to boosting the ISO sensitivity is that "noise" is increased in the image. (See the noise comparison image later in this review).

The camera is very snappy. The start up time is excellent -- under a second. Shutter lag is more or less non-existent after the camera is already focused (by depressing the shutter partway). Even when the camera is not already focused, it's still very snappy. Auto focus is quick, even in dark areas (with the help of the focus assist light).

Casio EX-s500 Camera Conclusion

The Casio Exilim EX-S500 is an attractive, well-built camera. While the ultra-compact size is nice for some, for others it can easily slip out of your hand. With three colors to choose from, it's obvious that a large point of difference for this camera is its looks. The image quality is good with some minor issues at times and a high quality casio np-20 battery,but I think that most users of this camera will not notice. The LCD is nice and sharp and makes for excellent viewing and framing of images.

This camera is a good choice for people who need a stylish camera to take out on the town, as it won't take up much space in a pocket or purse. The speed of the camera and great battery life make it easy to catch the right "moment", which could come in handy for snapshots of kids. The Best Shot modes give you a ton of choices for those special shots, but the Auto mode works well too.

Big and inelegant, the Canon PowerShot G5 is a powerhouse camera with all the bells and whistles. And it takes very good shots.

Underneath its utilitarian exterior is almost every function serious photographers need, including full manual control, bracketing options, RAW file saves, numerous white balance presets, time-lapse shots, and even a wireless remote control. It's also equipped with an intelligent hot shoe, a control panel, and a fully articulated LCD viewfinder.

While a 32MB card is larger than you'll get with some other 5 Megapixel cameras, it's really just a starter card. I highly recommend getting something much larger -- 256MB is my recommendation. I've long been a fan of the 1GB IBM Microdrive, and that is supported by the G5, but keep in mind that it puts extra strain on the battery. There are plenty of "regular" 1GB CompactFlash cards out there, so you may want one of those instead.

The G5 uses the same BP-511 Li-ion battery as its predecessor. The battery has a very respectable 8.1 Watt/hours of power. Here's a look at battery life on the G5 and the competition:

Nikon doesn't publish the same kind of information about battery life as Sony and Canon, so I can't put any CP5400 data in the chart, aside from the power rating. Nikon does say that you can use the camera for 110 minutes with 100% LCD use. My guess is that the 5400 lies somewhere between the V1 and the G5.

The downside of proprietary batteries like the BP-511 battery is the cost and the fact that you can't use standard batteries (as you can with AA-based cameras) if you're in a bind. That's why I personally prefer cameras that use AA batteries.

When it's time to recharge, you just plug the included AC adapter into the G5. This same AC adapter can be used to power the camera in the studio, or when you're transferring photos to your computer. It takes 80 minutes to bring the battery back to 90% capacity, and then 2 more hours to fill it to 100%.

If you like accessories, then you'll love the G5. In the lens department, you can purchase the WC-DC58N wide-angle converter to shorten the focal length to 24.5 mm, or the TC-DC58N tele converter to bring the zoom up to 245 mm. A 58 mm close-up lens is also available. Note that the LA-DC58B conversion lens adapter is required in order to use any of these.

The G5 is compatible not only with Canon's EX-series Speedlites, but also their Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX and Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX ($650).

Other accessories include a soft carrying case and dual battery charger w/car power adapter .

The G5 can also print directly to all of Canon's Card Photo Printers, as well as any of their Bubble Jet printers that support the direct print function.

Obviously G5 image quality is a critical factor. There are numerous sites on the web that offer test images, particularly useful when several cameras are compared. I find that I can get good prints at 8x10 on an Epson 2200, “good” meaning that they rival good lab or darkroom prints. I don’t get the quality from these prints that I do with a 4000dpi scan from a 6x7 negative, but that’s expected. Beyond 8x10, there can be noticeable image deterioration in the prints.

The most serious problem with the images that I have taken is a small amount of chromatic aberration, seen as purple “fringing” on some images. This takes quite a bit of time to correct in Photoshop and is annoying when it shows. It’s not an issue on very many images, it seems to happen with bright highlights. This is the one serious issue with the resulting image quality produced from the camera – otherwise, it’s sharp and has good color characteristics and contrast. Noise level is an issue at ISO 400, but can be smoothed with some of the software that’s available.

The flip-out-and-around LCD screen completely changes the way one shoots. Except for a few large and somewhat cumbersome (compared to the G5) medium-format cameras, there is nothing being made today that allows waist-level shooting. With the screen out, it is very easy to shoot at waist level. If it’s important to shoot without being noticed, the flip-out screen makes this very easy. It also simplifies shooting at ground level, something that I like to do, and which can now be done on the knees instead of prone on the ground.

The G5 hasn’t been available long, and although I bought it within a few days of its availability, this still doesn’t constitute a “long term” test that really determines how comfortable a camera is to work with and how close the results are to what the photographer wants. For my kind of shooting and what I want it to do, it works well. Despite the shutter lag and the finder, it’s excellent for street shooting because of the ability to compose with the camera at a lower level. Except for the chromatic aberration, the image quality is excellent. It’s easy to control the camera.

Do I recommend it? In its class, there are specific choices that have to be made, such as the tradeoff between lens speed and focal length. It can certainly do the job, but it definitely won't be the last camera in this class. If I had my way, I'd put a fixed 35mm (equivalent) lens on it, shorten the shutter lag, and put in a brightline finder. Then I'd have the Hexar I've used so much, but digital. Otherwise, Canon has done a good job putting together a camera that does what I want it to do.

The Canon PowerShot S60 is the replacement to last year's popular PowerShot S50 model. Just by looking at the model number, you'd think that Canon just stuffed a 6 Megapixel sensor into the same old camera, as some other manufacturers have done. That's not the case here -- the S60 is a 5 Megapixel camera, just like its predecessor. Here's a list comparing the two cameras:

The Canon PowerShot S60 is a nice camera for those looking for a high resolution camera with a wide-angle lens, full manual controls, and a fairly compact body. Most compact digicams have lenses that start at 35 - 39 mm, but the S60's lens starts at 28 mm -- great for indoor shots.

Canon includes a 32MB CompactFlash card with the camera, which is a good starting point, but you'll want a larger card right away. I'd suggest 256MB as a good place to start. The included card is marked as "high speed", and from my own experiences I think it would be considered 8X. The S60 can use Type I or Type II cards, including the Microdrive, and it supports the FAT32 format for cards larger than 2GB.

The S60 uses a higher capacity version of the NB-2L battery that was used by the S50 -- this one's known as the NB-2LH. Where the old battery had 4.2 Wh of energy, the new battery has 5.3 Wh -- a 25% improvement. Canon estimates that you can take about 395 photos with 50% LCD use (which is up from 335 on the S50), or spend 3.5 hours in playback mode (compare with 3 hours on the S50).

My usual complaints about proprietary batteries apply here. They're expensive , and you can't put in a set of alkalines to get you through the rest of the day like you could with an AA-based camera.

When it's time to recharge, just drop the battery into the included charger. This is my favorite style of charger -- it plugs right into the wall (yes, I know some don't like this).Canon nb-2lh battery is powerful rechargerable battery.It takes about ninety minutes to fully charge the battery.

A sliding metal cover protects the S60's lens and doubles as the power switch. It is pretty easy to accidentally bump the door and shut the camera off, though. As you can see, the camera is fairly wide.

Look and Feel

The PowerShot S60 has gotten a bit of a facelift since its predecessor. Let's take a look:

On the front of the S60, things have been moved around since the S50, and there's a brand new lens too. The differences that matter more in terms of usability can be found on the back. For example, the annoying four-way controller that's been on the S-series for years is gone. More on all this below.

The S60 is a midsize camera, fitting in somewhere between the A75 and G3 in terms of size. It's not Digital ELPH size -- not even close. Still, you'll find that it fits in most of your pockets. The camera is made almost entirely of metal, and it feels very solid. The important controls are easy to reach, and the camera is easier to operate than its predecessor.

The dimensions of the S60 are 114.0 x 56.5 x 38.8 mm / 4.5 x 2.2 x 1.5 inches (W x H x D, excluding protrusions), and it weighs 230 grams / 8.1 ounces empty. The numbers for the S50 were 4.4 x 2.3 x 1.7 inches and 260 grams, respectively.

The PowerShot S60 has a totally new lens design, which is what allowed Canon to make the S60 thinner while adding more zoom power. This new lens uses something called "UA", which stands for ultra-high refractive index, aspherical (say that three times fast). Regardless of the technical explanation behind the name, the bottom line is that UA allowed for a compact lens covering 28 - 100 mm, instead of 35 - 105 mm like on the S50. The focal range of the lens in digital terms is 5.8 - 20.7 mm, and the maximum aperture is F2.8 - F5.3, with the latter being a bit slow. As I mentioned in the previous section, the camera supports 37 mm filters as well as a 2X teleconverter through the use of the conversion lens adapter.

To the upper-right of the lens is the built-in flash. The flash has a working range of 0.55 - 4.2 at wide-angle and 0.55 - 2.0 m at telephoto, a little worse than on the S50. You cannot attach an external flash to this camera.

Directly below the flash is the receiver for the optional remote control, plus the microphone. To the left of the flash (next to the optical viewfinder) is the AF-assist lamp, a useful feature which has been found on nearly all Canon cameras for years.

Build and Design

At first glance the hp dv1000 laptop battery looks a lot more expensive that it really is. The outer shell is made of black colored plastic. The inside of the battery is all black with a sort of textured feel to it. I would have preferred all black rather than the others, but the look seems to work for this model. We couldn't measure the Aspire 3003LCi's mobile performance precisely, because the system's battery couldn't last the 90 minutes it takes to complete CNET Labs' mobile benchmarks. It consistently cut out after about 70 minutes, which is nearly two hours less than average. Battery life aside, the Aspire 3003LCi displayed enough power in our SysMark performance tests to handle basic productivity tasks such as e-mail, Web surfing, and word processing; it performed on a par with other low-priced systems, including the Gateway NX500X (a.k.a the M360) and the Acer Aspire 5000.

While the RAM has been bumped from 512MB to 1GB, and the onboard storage from 4GB to 12GB (or 20GB in the Linux version), you're still stuck with the same 900MHz Celeron processor. With new mobile CPUs from Intel and Via on the way, and more powerful mobile processors available in the Lenovo U110 and MacBook Air (both of which admittedly cost nearly $2,000), that's starting to look dangerously dated, especially now that, at $550, the Eee PC has passed the point of an impulse purchase.

The new Eee PC is, at first glance, virtually identical to the original. The chassis is only marginally larger and a few ounces heavier, but it has the same white, pearlized plastic look. The Eee PC 900 is still among the smallest of the Netbooks, about the size of a trade paperback book, and it can fit in a large jacket pocket without too much trouble.

Opening up the lid, the most striking difference is the new, larger screen. There's still a fairly thick screen bezel, but the two speaker grills that sat next to the 7-inch model's screen are gone (they now sit under the front lip of the system), and the display now fills more of the lid space. The touch pad is larger as well, and supports a handful of gesture controls, similar to those on the MacBook Air. Images can be pinched (or unpinched) with the thumb and forefinger to zoom in and out, and two fingers can be used to scroll up and down Web pages. The zooming only works with select software--for example, we could zoom a photo in the Windows image viewer, but not in Firefox.

The keyboard, with its tiny UMPC-sized keys, unfortunately remains unchanged from the 7-inch Eee PC. It's still fairly hard to use for any length of time, especially now that we've seen a couple of tiny laptops (Lenovo's U100 and HP's 2133 Mini-Note) with nearly full-size keyboards.

One of the major benefits of the bigger screen is its higher resolution. At 1,024x600, it's still on the low side, but it's a major improvement over the original Eee PC's 800x480 resolution, which made most Web sites hard to read, and left little room on the desktop for icons and files.

HP's mainstream Compaq Presario 2100 series is one of the most chameleonlike notebooks around. It goes from a frugal $899 mainstream system (a mail-in rebate good through December 1, 2003 cuts the price by $100), with basic specs such as an Intel Celeron or an AMD Athlon processor and a 14.1-inch display, to a packed $2,266 desktop replacement, with an Intel Pentium 4-M CPU and a 15-inch screen. Things only get better from there, with the ability to add more cutting-edge options such as a DVD/CD-RW combo drive and integrated wireless. Be aware that the Presario 2100's lack of a cutting-edge graphics chip prohibits peak performance; still, it provides enough speed and battery life for the average tasks of a home user. If you yearn for a desktop replacement with even more features and speed, check out the Compaq Presario 3000 series.

The Presario 2100 series is a well-crafted mainstream notebook, and our only major complaint with the design is the loud fan that kicks in on occasion. The 7.2-pound notebook measures a slightly wide 13 by 10.7 by 1.6 inches, which is reasonable when you consider that every system in the series comes with a big and bright 14.1- or 15-inch screen, an integrated floppy drive, and a built-in CD, DVD, or DVD/CD-RW combo drive.

We're particularly partial to the unusual blue lights that complement the Presario 2100 series' power button and the standard touchpad (no pointing stick option is available). A button above the touchpad turns the pad on and off, helping you avoid accidentally moving the pointer by bumping the pad. We also like the way the right side of the touchpad is sectioned off by a vertical line, indicating the part of the software-enhanced pad that you should use for scrolling. Two mouse buttons form a smile shape underneath the pad. Finally, the wide keyboard features a familiar, desktoplike layout, with Insert, Delete, Home, and End keys huddled in the upper-right corner.

The Presario 2100 series comes with a full assortment of ports and slots. Its right edge sports one PS/2 port and whichever secondary optical storage drive you choose. The active-matrix display comes in two sizes and two native resolutions: 14.1 or 15 inches at an average 1,024x768 pixels, as well as another 15-inch option with a finer 1,400x1,050 resolution. All memory consists of fast 266MHz DDR SDRAM starting at 128MB and going to 1,024MB. You can also order either integrated 802.11b or the extrafast 802.11g wireless networking, although you'll have to rely on software wireless controls because the system lacks a convenient wireless On/Off switch. The model we tested included a 2.4GHz Pentium 4-M processor, 512MB of memory, and a 60GB hard drive.

If your head is swimming from all of these choices, HP also offers several preconfigured versions of the Presario 2100.

HP offers a satisfying selection of software with the Presario 2100 series. The penny-pincher's option includes Microsoft Works 6.0, along with Money 2003, Quicken Financial Center, InterVideo WinDVD, and Encarta Online. The company also provides the more full-featured Microsoft Office Small Business Edition and Professional office suites. Systems including CD-RW and DVD/CD-RW drives ship with Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator. HP understandably supplies only one operating system with this home-oriented notebook, and it's Windows XP Home.

Mobile application performance

The Compaq Presario 2100 performed below average compared to previous 2.4GHz Pentium 4-M systems that we've tested. This performance deficiency can be attributed to its ATI Radeon 340M graphics adapter, which borrows 64MB of main memory and cripples the system's performance. The Presario 2100 scored even lower than the 2.2GHz desktop Pentium 4 Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100. The system, however, ranked significantly higher than the Fujitsu LifeBook E series, which has the same processor and uses a similar graphics adapter. This review is for the Hewlett Packard DV4000 laptop.The unit is a multimedia notebook in a medium sized form factor. For several months I have been looking for a portable computer that I could use to surf the internet while sitting in my easy chair. I looked at the Dell Inspiron 6000,
Toshiba Satellite 3000 and the Sony VAIO FS550. The Toshiba didn't have a glossy screen and the Sony's audio system was barely audible. I thought the Dell was clunky looking. I always liked HP's DV1000 but thought its 14-inch screen too small. When the dv4000 came out with a beautiful 15.4 inch screen, it was just the ticket I had been looking for. I purchased this configure-to-build unit fromHPShopping.com for $1191 after rebate (before taxes) . I saved a little by going through the EPP (employee purchase program) site which gives modest discounts to employees of large companies. It only took 8 days from placing my order to being delivered at my home after being built and shipped from China. When I placed the order, HP estimated it would take a month for delivery. I understand from others who have ordered from HP, they are often this conservative and give you a ship date further out than what is actual.

Striking just the right combination of black and silver, HP made the Pavilion dv4000 one cool-looking laptop. The inside is black; the lid, the sides, and the touch pad are silver; and a handful of status lights scattered around the case glow a pleasing blue. Similar to the Acer Aspire 1410, the midsize Pavilion dv4000 measures 1.5 inches thick, 14.0 inches wide, and 10.3 inches deep. At 6.7 pounds, it's about the same weight as the Gateway M460S, half a pound lighter than the Dell Inspiron 6000, and 1.2 pounds heavier than the dv1000. With its 8-ounce AC adapter, the Pavilion dv4000 has a reasonable travel weight of 7.1 pounds.

As you can see, I upgraded the drive to 5400RPM , added Bluetooth and a 12-cell battery. This is one of the reasons I didn't buy a retail version like the dv4030us ($1399-$50 rebate)....you are stuck with a 4200RPM hard drive, Wi-Fi but no Bluetooth and only a 6 cell battery. If you ordered the 12 cell battery as an extra it would cost you $179. When I configured my dv4000 it was only $25 more than the 6 cell battery. If you do the math you can see the customized laptop was a better deal for me even though you can sometimes buy a retail unit for $1199 when CompUSA or Office Depot is running a promotion.

Screen

The screen was one of the main reasons I bought the dv4000...it is stunning. When I play DVD's on it, my friends can't believe how clear and bright it is. Similar to the DV1000 (as was pointed out in the excellent review of the dv1000 and hp pavilion dv1000 battery), the DV4000 LCD has a limited vertical viewing angle. You have to tilt it just right to get the best contrast and brightness. This is mostly an issue when playing DVDs and less of a problem when running typical applications for web surfing and word processing. The glossy screen can introduce a lot of glare, especially in a bright office, but in a dimly lit home it is not as bad. I want to stress this glossy screen can look like a mirror under some lighting conditions. Here is a photo showing the screen reflecting my backyard:

Audio and Build Quality

Besides the nice screen I picked the dv4000 for its audio. Those front firing speakers are very impressive for a laptop. Few other notebooks are as loud and clear. The fit and finish seems first rate. Build quality also seems pretty good too for a unit in this price range. Let's be clear, it's no bullet proof IBM ThinkPad, but it isn't bad. The keyboard has very little flex and the keyboard travel is good. I have noticed that the shift keys sometimes make a plastic rubbing plastic sound. I hope this does not become a problem. I suspect since the shift key is so large it may not be supported as well as the smaller keys. The only other key issue is over the up/down arrow keys. Sometimes it doesn't want to scroll a page. I have had to click a few times on the page before the arrow buttons work.I tend to use the up/down keys instead of the scroll bar as it is much faster. The scroll bar is located on the right side of the touchpad. It takes a while getting used to, I would prefer a scroll wheel like they have on a mouse (I don't know of any laptop with a built-in scroll wheel though!). The LCD hinges are sufficiently strong to hold the screen at any angle. The LCD frame does appear to be a weak spot. Don't get me wrong, the LCD doesn't distort when you move it like some cheap notebooks, but when you press on the back of the LCD (the top of the notebook) it creates distortions. I shudder to think what would happen if you dropped a heavy book on the top of the closed laptop. Speaking of closed....when you close the cover it is quiet...no loud clicks. It appears to latch well.

Hard drive

I was concerned that the 60GB 5400RPM (Hitachi) hard drive would be noisy. It is not. You can hear some little ticking sounds if you are in a quiet room. In a normal room with TV or music you won't hear the drive. Another thing you won't hear is the fan. It rarely comes on- almost never when just web surfing. When it does come on it sounds like an ocean breeze that is rather pleasant. It must not be a high RPM fan because it is nearly silent. Once again in an average room with background sounds you won't hear a thing.

I got the hp pavilion dv4000 extended battery because I wasn't concerned about the extra weight it added, but with the 12 cell battery this sucker is heavy. HP says it is 6.5 pounds with a 6 cell battery so with the big battery it's about 7 pounds, this is not terrible but not light either. I wouldn't want to carry it from class to class. As you can see in the picture the battery bulges out of the bottom giving the unit a nice slant for ergonomic purposes. Air circulation is improved with this raising of the notebook also.It ruins the sleekness of the laptop, but I don't care. I don't plan on moving the laptop too much so the extra weight is no big deal. Battery life has been impressive, about 7.5 hours under light use.

The X200 is a wonder of engineering, with all the necessary performance packed into a tiny chassis. Add to this the well-featured docking station, and the only thing this ultra portable lacks is wireless connectivity.

There's something unnerving about carrying the Dell Latitude X200 around. With most notebooks, you can feel their weight as a constant reminder of their existence - with this 1.3kg wonder, I found myself constantly checking my bag to make sure it was still there. My fears were doubled by the fact that the chassis measures just 24mm from top to bottom, while its width is a briefcase-friendly 273mm.

Media frenzy

The $2,557 Latitude X200 we tested came with Intel's new 800MHz ultralow-voltage mobile Pentium III-M, 256MB of RAM, and a 30GB hard drive. Its media slice included a floppy drive in one bay and a front-loading, 8X DVD/CD-RW combo drive in the other. Thanks to dual sliding locks, attaching and releasing the slice is a cinch. Sans media slice, the notebook costs $1,999.

Small but well supplied

The Latitude X200 may be small, but it squeezes in a lot of features. It measure .8 inches thick by 10.7 inches wide by 8.9 inches deep and weighs 2.8 pounds. The AC adapter adds .49 pounds, while the media slice adds 2.46 pounds and doubles the notebook's thickness. Connectivity is good, with one IEEE 1394 (FireWire), one Ethernet, one modem, one audio, and two USB ports. The single Type II PC Card slot is nice, but rather than a spring-loaded door, it comes with a flimsy, plastic dummy card that'd be easy to break or lose. Dell meets you halfway on 802.11b wireless networking; you get dual antennae inside the system, but you have to purchase the optional TrueMobile 1150 mini-PCI wireless card ($149) to make them work or use a wireless card in the PC Card slot.

Average speed, battery life

It's unclear whether the low-voltage processor helped the Latitude X200; the Dell's standard six-cell battery conked out after just 114 minutes in tests,so dell latiutude x200 battery have a longer battery life. which is normal for an ultralight. By comparison, the Toshiba Portégé 2000 lasted only 92 minutes on its primary battery, but the Gateway 200 held on for 161 minutes. If you need more juice, squeeze out another for the X200's optional second battery, an eight-cell pack or a universal laptop battery to choose.

The Latitude X200 performed capably in performance tests. Running Windows XP Professional, it closely trailed the Gateway 200, which had a faster 866MHz CPU. The Toshiba Portégé 2000's 750MHz mobile Pentium III CPU (which has a slower frontside bus and a smaller Level 2 cache than the mobile Pentium III-M's in the Dell and Gateway) kept it respectfully behind the Latitude X200.

Dell does appear to have half an eye on the after-hours customer, though. There's a 30GB hard disk to provide plenty of storage space for audio, video and other space-hungry files, while a full-sized

FireWire port makes hooking up a DV camera or external drive simplicity itself. Add two USB ports, a VGA output and the ubiquitous Ethernet and modem ports, and this notebook is surprisingly well connected.

Our only criticisms here are the lack of an infrared port, Wireless LAN and Bluetooth. The latter two may seem like luxuries now, but in 18 months we suspect they'll be a standard inclusion - and there's just one PC Card slot, after all. That said, Dell will fit a mini-PCI 802.11b card for ?9.

While we're covering the Latitude's bad points, we should mention battery life. It only just kept going for two hours in our light-use test, while pushing the notebook to its maximum cut this time in half. This isn't a huge surprise, as the battery itself is tiny. This does at least mean you can buy a second battery for ?9 without adding too much to your luggage, or you could choose the extended life unit (which increases the weight to 1.5kg) for ?06.

One extra that Dell includes as part of this configuration is the excellent media slice (a docking station to the rest of us). This includes two USB ports, plus ports for FireWire, parallel, serial, PS/2, S/PDIF, Ethernet and a VGA output. We also appreciate the DVD/CD-RW combo drive, which is accompanied by a floppy drive. So it doesn't take much to transform this notebook into a fully featured desktop PC at home or work.

Alternatively, you can buy a much more basic version of the Latitude - say with an external CD-ROM rather than the docking station - which will set you back a mere ?,249 (e-Value code 200-L01REV). And that includes a three-year, on-site, next-business-day warranty, just like the reviewed specification here.

Hopefully, you won't need to call on this cover, as the Latitude X200 is well built despite its svelte dimensions. The slate grey chassis may be made of ruggedised plastic rather than magnesium alloy, but it offers plenty of protection to the screen. The only thing it lacks is the stylish finish of a Sharp Muramasa PC-UM10 or Toshiba Portege 2000 (see Labs, issue 91, p92).

Okay, so it's not that glamorous, dell latitude x200 battery life is far from amazing, and there's no integrated wireless. But the Latitude X200 weighs a feather-light 1.3kg, is quick enough for all those chore-like jobs most people use ultra portables for, and its price is amazing. Our advice: go to the website and order one now. Just remember to quote Dell's 200-L02REV e-Value code.

The Dell Inspiron 6000 series is a midrange desktop-replacement system with an entertainment slant and 6600mah dell insoiron 6000 laptop battery, appropriate for home and small-office use. The design is quite similar to that found on a number of other Dell laptops, including the Inspiron 9300 and the XPS M140. The notebook is light silver with a white trim, and it measures about 1.5 inches thick, 14 inches across, and just less than 10.5 inches deep. The keyboard is firm and adequately responsive, and it's big enough to work on comfortably. Below the keyboard is a nice-size touch pad with two big mouse buttons. Our test unit weighed 6.6 pounds, or 7.5 pounds with the compact AC adapter--about average for a midsize and not quite light enough for comfortable travel. Overall, the case feels fairly sturdy, though the lid gives quite a bit when you push down on it. We like the silver media-control buttons that line the case's front edge. They're accessible even when the notebook's lid is closed, and you can use them to adjust the volume (or mute) and toggle through tracks on a CD or scenes on a DVD. Two stereo speakers also sit along the Inspiron 6000's front edge; they were louder and clearer than your average laptop speakers.

Dell sells the Inspiron 6000 series online or via phone, and you can choose from a wide range of components to customize your system. The Inspiron 6000 is available with Intel's less powerful Celeron processor, running at 1.3GHz or 1.5GHz, or a Pentium M. If you go the Pentium M route, you can choose between a first-generation Centrino processor running at 1.5GHz and a slightly faster Sonoma processor running at 1.6GHz. So far, the Sonoma platform hasn't borne out a huge boost in performance over first-generation Centrino.

You can load the Inspiron 6000 with up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, and hard drive capacities range from 30GB to 80GB. Secondary storage options include the base-level DVD-ROM, which will also play CDs; a CD-RW/DVD combo drive; and a multiformat, dual-layer DVD burner. The Toshiba Satellite A105 is a no-frills media center laptop at a rock-bottom price.and with better toshiba satellite A105 battery.Though competing 15.4-inch wide-screen notebooks, such as the Lenovo 3000 N100, the Dell Inspiron E1505, and the Micro Express EL80, all offer either slightly better performance, better battery life, or both, they charge more for it, too. If you're looking for a Media Center experience but don't want to break the bank, you should consider the Satellite A105.

Like most of Toshiba's other Satellites, the A105 is conservatively styled. With a dark gray, black, and silver case, the most colorful bit of this notebook is its obligatory Windows XP sticker. The Satellite A105 measures 14.2 inches wide, 10.5 inches deep and 1.5 inches thick and weighs 6 pounds, putting it right between the thin-and-light and the midsize categories. Though it's virtually the same size as the Lenovo 3000 N100, the Micro Express EL80, and the Dell Inspiron E1505, the Satellite A105 is lighter than all those models. With its AC adapter, the Satellite A105 hits the road at 7.1 pounds.

We think the display should be a star feature of a notebook that ships with Windows XP Media Center Edition, but the Satellite A105's 15.4-inch, glossy, wide-screen display disappoints. It's bright and has excellent color contrast, but with its 1,280x800 native resolution--the same as many 12-inch wide screens--you're carrying a larger, heavier screen without getting any functional real estate advantage. The Satellite A105 can display 17 columns and 36 rows of a spreadsheet and show a word processing document at 150 percent with no need for horizontal scrolling, which is exactly the same as the Fujitsu LifeBook Q2010, one of the smallest ultraportables we've seen. Moreover, while 720p HD content looks exceptionally crisp, the Satellite A105's screen is too low-res for 1080i/p video.

Display aside, the notebook's other multimedia hardware, combined with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, makes for a good audiovisual experience. The Satellite A105's speakers sound rich on the low end and crisp on the high, though their limited volume means you'll have trouble filling a room with sound. The media controls to the left of the keyboard and the front-mounted analog volume dial are complemented by a dedicated key that launches the Windows XP Media Center dashboard. The included S-Video out port makes it easy to connect to most modern TVs. Unfortunately, a remote control is conspicuously absent.

Though Toshiba could have used the Satellite A105's width to provide a full-size keyboard, the company instead opted for one that's slightly narrow. In addition, the Windows key has been relocated to the upper right, something that will undoubtedly frustrate people who depend on keyboard commands. Like other Toshiba laptops we've reviewed, the Satellite A105's touch pad is smaller than we'd prefer and lacks a dedicated scroll zone.

The Satellite A105 has more than enough ports and connections for home users. There are 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi, and a 56Kbps modem for networking; four USB 2.0 ports; a FireWire port; two PC Card slots (but not the latest ExpressCards); S-Video out; VGA out; headphone and microphone jacks; and a 5-in 1 memory card reader for Secure Digital, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, MultiMediaCard, and xD-Picture Cards. Users who want Bluetooth, a Webcam, or a fingerprint reader will have to purchase external USB peripherals, as these features are not built in.

The Satellite A105's software package provides applications for all critical software categories. Besides Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, the notebook ships with Microsoft Works 8.5 for productivity, Microsoft OneNote 2003 for taking notes, Sonic RecordNow for burning discs, InterVideo WinDVD 5 for playing DVDs, and InterVideo WinDVD Creator 2 Platinum for making DVD videos.

The notebook's most attractive feature may be its rock-bottom price. Though the suggested retail price for our Satellite A105 is an already low $999, some retailers are selling it for $799 after rebates. For that price you get a mix of low-end to midrange components, including a 1.6GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 512MB of average 533MHz RAM, a huge 120GB hard drive that spins at 5,400rpm, and an integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics subsystem. By comparison, a similarly configured Lenovo 3000 N100 costs $998 but does not include Windows XP Media Center Edition, while a Dell Latitude E1505 can be configured with the exact same specs for $891.

On CNET Labs' performance benchmarks, the Satellite A105 held its own against notebooks with significantly faster processors, most likely due to superior power management by Toshiba. The Satellite A105 came close to matching the performance of the Lenovo 3000 N100 and the Dell Inspiron E1505, and it outran by 27 percent the Micro Express EL80, which is stocked with high-end components. Overall, we think the Satellite A105's performance should be more than enough for most home users who want to want to surf the Web, type documents, and play and burn discs.

In our battery-drain tests, the Satellite A105 offered 3 hours, 49 minutes, of away-from-the-wall work time. That's just above average for a laptop of this size and 40 minutes longer than the Lenovo 3000 N100; the Dell Inspiron E1505, however, lasted nearly an hour longer, while the Micro Express EL80 topped 6 hours of battery life.

For several months before its release, the Asus Eee PC was one of a handful of small, inexpensive PCs that had tech types buzzing with anticipation. While the other systems, the Intel Classmate and the One Laptop Per Child XO, are aimed at the educational needs of children around the globe and not generally available to consumers, the Eee holds no such highbrow pedigree--it's for sale directly from Asus to the laptop-buying public.

The initial buzz on the Asus Eee had the 7-inch, Linux-based laptop coming in as low at $199. In the end, the price is a more realistic $399, which includes a low-end Intel Mobile CPU, 512MB of RAM, and a 4GB solid-state flash hard drive (versions with 2GB and 8GB hard drives will also be available). The obvious limitations of the tiny hard drive, low-power CPU, and lack of the Windows operating system may be enough to scare away many potential users, but despite the system's budget origins, we found it hard to dislike when viewed as a highly portable Web surfing and office productivity machine.

The Asus Eee is certainly worth a look as a second laptop for travelers, or perhaps a first laptop for kids--one you won't be afraid to leave in accident-prone hands. The Asus Eee looks like a fairly conventional ultraportable laptop, shrunk down by about a third. With a small 7-inch screen, the laptop weighs 2 pounds and measures 8.8 inches wide by 6.5 inches deep by a little less than an inch thick. In all, the Eee PC is about the size of a trade paperback book; it can fit in a large jacket pocket without too much trouble. The pearlized white look is attractive, if generic, and the typically understated Asus design keeps the system from looking too cheap.

Cramming all the things one expects from a laptop into a package this small presents some difficult design questions, and the Asus Eee answers most of them about as well as can be expected. The biggest challenge is the keyboard. Tiny keyboards, as on ultraportable systems such as the Toshiba R500 or Sony VAIO TZ150, are hampered by both Chiclet-size keys and unfortunate compromises in key placement and double-mapped keys. The Eee takes it a step further, with some of the tiniest keys we've ever had to deal with. At least most of the space is saved for making sure the actual letter keys are a usable size, which makes typing at least possible, if not entirely easy. Other keys, including the backspace, tab, and control keys, are smaller--mere slivers of their usual selves, and especially hard to hit. The tiny touchpad measures 1.75 inches by 1.25 inches and works well on the whole, but there's only a single mouse button--click on the left side for the left mouse button, and the right for the right mouse button. We'd prefer two separate buttons. Overall, the keyboard is easier to use than any UMPC we've seen, but far more cramped than any other ultraportable PC.

The 7-inch screen looks even smaller than it is thanks to the large black screen bezel that frames it. At least the extra space around the screen serves a purpose: a Webcam sits above the screen and tiny speakers reside on the left and right sides of the display, emitting tinny but passable sound for things like YouTube videos. With a resolution of 800x480, there's not a lot of screen real estate to spare, but the combination of low resolution and a tiny screen make for letters that don't (usually) require squinting. One niggling annoyance: at 800 pixels wide, many Web pages are too wide for the screen and require horizontal scrolling. We'd happily trade the thick screen bezel for an extra inch or so of screen real estate and a 1024x768 resolution, even if it meant we'd lose the Webcam and would have to get along with even smaller speakers.

The biggest adjustment most users will encounter with the Asus Eee is trading Windows for the Linux operating system. While this machine is technically capable of supporting Windows, and Asus plans to sell a version with the Microsoft OS in the near future, right now, Linux is the only option. While the scant 4GB hard drive and unfamiliar (to many) operating system might make it hard to get the software you need, the Eee actually sports a very user-friendly custom Linux installation, and many of the apps you'll want are preloaded and easy to access through a series of tabbed desktop pages.

Firefox is there for Web surfing and OpenOffice 2.0 for working with word-processing documents and spreadsheets. Both should already be familiar to Windows users (and OpenOffice is an especially appealing solution, as it reads and writes the popular Microsoft Office formats, and is worth checking out even for dedicated Windows users). There's also a generic media player, an instant messaging client that works with AOL, Yahoo, and other popular IM systems, and a handful of preinstalled casual games. Under the settings tab, you can check system information, add and remove programs, and perform diagnostic tests. It's a reasonably useful selection of software, and for Web surfing and working with documents, perfectly acceptable. You may, however, miss some popular software that won't run on Linux, such as iTunes or Photoshop.

With three USB ports, a VGA out, and standard headphone and mic jacks, the Asus Eee offers decent connectivity. FireWire is the one missing standard element, aside from the obvious absence of an optical drive. The SD card slot offers a good opportunity to boost the hard drive space, allowing you to pop in your own flash memory, easily doubling the system's 4GB drive (only about 1.3GB of which is actually free), with your own 4GB SD card, which you can get for around $50.

Without the common frame of reference we get from our standard benchmark tests, including iTunes and Photoshop, it's difficult to judge the Eee's performance, especially as it comes with its own set of preinstalled software, doubtlessly tuned to the limitations of the hardware. We can't imagine 512MB of RAM or a 900MHz Intel Mobile processor would results in a pleasant Windows Vista experience (maybe the stripped down Vista Basic version in a pinch), but these meager specs suffice for lean Linux. We were able to surf the Web and work on some office documents with absolutely no stuttering or slowdown, which was a pleasant surprise. Gaming is a no-go, beyond the strictly casual variety (our favorite preinstalled game: Crack Attack). For its intended purpose of getting online while on the road, we found the Eee PC to be more than up to the challenge.

We were not able to run our normal DVD playback battery test, but in anecdotal testing, we were able to use the Eee for a little under 3 hours while running a mix of Web browsers, OpenOffice documents, and playing MP3 files. Asus says the 4-cell battery is rated for 3.5 hours, which is decent for an ultraportable laptop, especially one this inexpensive.

Asus covers its laptops with a standard one-year parts-and-labor warranty, and it offers online Web-based help and a toll-free phone number. The company's support Web site includes the expected driver downloads and a brief FAQ but lacks useful features such as user forums or the chance to chat in real time with a technician.

Dell to recall 4 million batteries
The recall affects certain Inspiron, Latitude and Precision mobile workstations and XPS units shipped between April 2004 and July 18, 2006. Sony manufactured the batteries that are being recalled, the representative said.

If they have one of the affected units, consumers are advised to eject the battery from the notebook after powering down and continue using the notebook with its AC power adapter, the CPSC said. Dell has so far received six reports of overheating units that caused property damage, but no injuries.

Dell has faced several issues this year related to exploding or flaming notebooks, and wants to ensure the safety of its customers, the representative said. The 4.1 million units is a subset of the 22 million units shipped during that time frame, he said. Dell said it doesn't expect the cost of the recall to materially affect its earnings. The company reports earnings for the previous quarter this Thursday.

At the moment, this looks like the largest battery recall in the history of the electronics industry, said Roger Kay, an analyst with Endpoint Technologies Associates. "The scale of it is phenomenal."

Sony will help pay the costs associated with the recall of 4.1 million batteries the company supplied to Dell, said Rick Clancy, a Sony spokesman.

"We are supporting Dell's recall," Clancy said. "There will be financial assistance and we are sharing engineering data and both doing further research." He declined to specify exactly how much assistance Sony would provide.

Customers will be able to go to a Dell Web site or to the Consumer Product Safety Commission site to determine if they need a new battery. Dell also plans to launch a toll-free number, 1-866-342-0011, for people affected by the situation, IDC analyst Richard Shim said.

"It's a huge deal," Shim said, particularly for Dell customers with employees in remote locations or traveling. "If you have people all over the field, then you're asking folks to send in the batteries and run off just AC (alternating current power) until they can get new batteries shipped out to them."

Dell had only six incidents over millions of units, Shim said, but it's "a dangerous situation."

What causes the problem?
Lithium ion batteries have two to three times the energy density of nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries and four times the energy density of lead-acid batteries. Higher energy density translates to longer battery life. Lithium ion batteries are used in consumer electronics and notebooks, which only require a limited amount of energy. Hybrid cars and power tools, however, generally use more traditional batteries, in part because of the risk of explosion.

The problems Dell is having stem from impurities within the anode and cathode of the battery, said Kay, who was briefed on the problems by Dell executives. Over time, those impurities, usually tiny pieces of metal, can work their way to the edge of the anode or cathode and rupture the isolator that sits between the two, he said. Once that happens, you get a short circuit and possibly a fire.

In cell phones, lithium ion batteries can overheat because of a short circuit. If the temperature rises slowly, the battery case may melt. If it rises rapidly, however, enough pressure may be generated to create a small explosion in a lithium ion battery. Consumers have suffered severe burns as a result of these failures. The chemical reaction that produces energy in a lithium ion battery is considered quite violent.

Several companies, including Valence Technology and PowerGenix, are working on safer lithium ion batteries or batteries which rely on different chemicals.

"The timing of this does buy Dell goodwill with customers and potential customers," said Sam Bhavnani, an analyst with Current Analysis. The first pictures of exploding laptops were posted in June, and the company has moved fairly quickly to investigate whether or not the problems were isolated or more widespread, he said.

It's possible that other PC vendors are using the Sony batteries in their products, Kay said. Dell executives told Kay that the company was one of the first to begin using this type of battery, and that they think other problems will crop up down the road for other PC companies.

But even if two companies use the same batteries, they don't necessarily design the technology that connects the battery to the notebook in the same way, Kay said. For example, Lenovo's notebooks use software that's designed to shut down the battery if it notices a problem and they charge the batteries more slowly than others in the industry, a company representative said. A Dell representative was unable to comment on the specifc technology it uses to enclose its batteries.

Sony's lithium ion cells can be found in the battery packs used by other manufacturers, but at this point Sony and those manufacturers have not seen the same level of problems that affected the Dell notebooks with Sony's technology, Clancy said. "We are in close communication with our customers, and as appropriate we will work with them and the CPSC if needed," he said.

A Lenovo representative said the company has not seen an unusual pattern of problems with its notebook batteries, although no PC company is immune to battery issues from time to time. Lynn Fox, an Apple Computer spokeswoman, said, "We are currently investigating whether batteries that have been supplied to Apple for our current and previous notebook lines meet our high standards for battery safety and performance." Representatives for Hewlett-Packard and Gateway were not immediately available to comment.

With low-cost notebooks such as Asus’ Eee PC being all the rage these days, Acer is reportedly considering to TRAVELMATE 650 shop . According to Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin, the company recently formed a team to begin working on projects for the sector.

But the market for low-cost PCs is still uncertain and the popularity of Linux platform is still under evaluation, according to Lin, which is why the company is still considering whether to launch any products. He then highlighted that Acer has not yet budgeted any R&D funds for the low-end PC project and that the company will continue to focus on its typical notebook product lineup in 2008, so we probably won’t be seeing an Eee PC rival from Acer anytime soon.

Whenever a new mobile technology is developed, Acer is usually at the front of the queue to introduce it -- for example, the company was the first to circulate a pre-production Tablet PC before the launch last year. True to recent form, our first sight of a Centrino notebook came in the shape of Acer's TravelMate 800, a slim and reasonably lightweight 15in.-screen system based on the flagship 1.6GHz version of the Pentium M/Banias processor.

Design

Acer's notebooks have earned a good reputation for thoughtful design and solid build quality, and the elegant TravelMate 800 does that reputation no harm at all. Although it's distinctly slim, measuring just 2.95cm at its thickest and weighing a luggable 2.76kg, the TravelMate 800's sizeable 15in. display and extensive feature set place it firmly in desktop replacement territory. It's not the heftiest of desktop replacements because it's a two-spindle device, with a 40GB hard disk and a modular media bay that accepts a variety of options. If you want a floppy drive, though, you'll have to go for the external USB option.

In terms of looks, the TravelMate 800 has a professional demeanour: clad in a smart sliver and grey finish, it backs up those boardroom looks with a solid construction that includes an aluminium alloy back panel and fibreglass chassis reinforcements. This system should be able to take the knocks handed out by everyday mobile life.

Apart from the screen, which is a good-quality 15in. TFT unit with a native resolution of 1,400 by 1,050 pixels (SXGA+), the key ergonomic aspects of a notebook are the keyboard and the mouse pointer. Acer's FineTouch keyboard is notable for its layout, which features a comfortable 5-degree curve; on the downside, though, the Home and End keys are doubled up with the PgUp and PgDn keys, requiring the Fn key to be depressed at the same time. Still, the keys are a good size and have a positive action; there are four quick-launch keys, two of which are user-programmable. The pointer is a two-button trackpad that incorporates a handheld-style four-way scroll key.

Features

As mentioned above, the TravelMate 800 is based around Intel's Centrino solution, which combines the Pentium M processor (a 1.6GHz chip in this case), the 855PM chipset and a PRO Wireless 2100 Network Connection that delivers Wi-Fi (802.11b) wireless connectivity – the system features dual 2.4GHz/5GHz antennas, and so will accommodate future dual 802.11a/b modules. Our review sample came with a reasonable 256MB of DDR SDRAM, but the system will support up to 2GB of main memory via its dual SODIMM slots.

But Acer has delivered much more than a basic off-the-shelf Centrino kit in the TravelMate 800. For a start, you get built-in Bluetooth connectivity as well as Wi-Fi -- a pair of buttons on the front fascia allows you to turn both wireless options on and off as required, in order to save power.

Another welcome feature is a SmartCard reader, located beneath the single Type II CardBus PC Card slot on the left-hand side. Using the PlatinumSecret software suite, you can configure the system to check if a particular SmartCard is registered (if not, the notebook is locked at the BIOS level), to provide user authentication at the OS level, and to extend the card's memory via a local or Web server.

More generally, the TravelMate 800 and ACER travelmate travlemate 800 series laptop batteryis a good corporate citizen, supporting boot-from-LAN, wake-on-LAN, multiple passwords and asset tag storage, and featuring a DMI-compliant BIOS.

The primary hard disk is a 40GB Hitachi drive with a rotational speed of 4,200rpm, while the primary battery is a hefty 14.8V, 4,400mAh Li-ion unit.

The TravelMate 800 and travelmate 650, travlemate 800 series provides a mixture of legacy and modern ports. There's a parallel port, but no serial or PS/2 ports (for those, and more, you'll need to buy the optional EasyPort docking station). A generous four USB 2.0 ports are provided on the left-hand side, along with a FireWire (IEEE 1394) connector and a single Type II PC Card slot. At the back, alongside the parallel port, you'll find the external VGA connector, an S-Video out port, RJ-11 and RJ-45 ports servicing the integrated V.90 modem and 10/100 Ethernet hardware and a 100-pin docking connector.
